Edition #2: Etching

For my next edition I am going to be doing an etching!!  So far I have only been doing relief printmaking. I am really looking forward to trying a type of printmaking that I haven't done yet and cant wait till after spring break when working on it.

I am going to be focusing this edition on American Consumerism and this generations need for the latest and greatest of everything. Here is a sketch of what I have in mind so far:

I will probably be adding and removing different parts of the face and will defiantly make his eyes line up as well as the other facial features including his mouth and nose.

Sunset Reduction Prints

Today I finished printing my first edition of this trimester. I ended up doing three layers which is what I had planned on doing. I had a more dificult time printing these because this was my first real reduciton and it was during the early hors of the morning, but other then that I ran into no major problems.

Back to Printing

I have taken a short break from printing (as well as blogging) for a few weeks as I got back into the groove of things for the new tri. This tri I am taking an independent printmaking class. After last tri I decided that one tri of printmaking was not enough for me, so i choose to take a more in-depth class on the printing process.

For this class I will be doing at least 5 editions. I am going to do a couple of linoleum prints and I will be trying out a few other types of printmaking, including drypoint etching, etching, and woodblock.

For my first assignment I am starting out with a reduction lino. I am taking a short break from the  metaphorical and symbolic prints for this one and am doing a nice Californian sunset. I have just finished my second layer and and printing it next week. I am hoping to finish this project and have pictures posted of the outcome on my next blog post.

Sorry for the lateness of this post, I was supposed to have this post up yesterday, but as it sometimes does, life got in the way. I am looking forward to continuing this blog and the printmaking process.

Final Exam and Artist statement

For my last blog post of this class, I am posting my artist statement and pictures of my final exam project. Before I write out my statement, here is a link to an awesome blog that I found called 1000 Woodcuts Updates, This blog is awesome and has a lot of good stuff about printmaking.

 Artist Statement:

I was inspired for my final exam project by flipping through vintage Life magazines. I knew that I wanted to use these magazines in some way, so I incorporated it into my final exam. I choose to use my train reduction block for the main theme for my final exam because that was the highlight of this class and the best example of what you actually do in Drawing and Printmaking. I used Lino and cardboard reduction printmaking techniques and I used a Sharpie permanent marker to add in and enhance details on the train and steam. While working on this project, I had many difficulties. These difficulties included using the wrong size paper, finding a way to get the two halves of the paper to blend and go well together. I believe that my strengths on this project included composition, colors, techniques used, and the actual printing. My weaknesses included rushing through the exam in the beginning, and some of the details in the background. If I was to redo this project I would have used a  little less ink and I would not have rushed through the project as much.
