Last Weeks

In the last couple of weeks I have been working on several different projects. Here are a couple of self portraits I have recently completed.

This one focuses on what goes on in our heads (well at least mine). I can give you a long winded explanation for it, but it is too long for me to write down know. The tricky part of this was the background. I spent upwards of 5 hours on the background alone. There is at least 6 layers of graphite on there. If your rub the background, your hand wont get smudged. That's how many layers are on this thing.

Right now I'm trying to come up with a title for this series of portraits. This series focuses on the discovery of something, and potential recovery. With this series, I had the most fun drawing the hair. It's spontaneity drew me in.

Upcoming Projects

I have a month to get top quality, portfolio pieces together for a highly competitive full ride scholarship through CCS. My odds are not the greatest, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to not give my all. I am hoping to accomplish several completely different projects in these last few weeks of advanced art:

Project 1
A series of 3 large self portraits. The first one with my hands pulling my hair and the back of my head. The second me lifting my hands up off my head and raising my head. The third one me looking tired but uncovered.

The theme of this series is the act of overcoming something. It may drain you dry, but you are better off in the end and weight free.

Project 2
This is my independent study project. I have two of the three windows painted. I still have to paint one window and do the plaster molds of my hands. Once I get going, It will only taking me a couple of days to complete.

Project 3
My mural! I am still in the planning stages, but the starting date is fast approaching. I am currently sketching ideas. The canvas should arrive within the next week or two. This project will continue into next try as an independent study.

Project 4
At the beginning of ceramics I bought a fifty pound box of clay. I am about halfway through that clay. With the remaining 25 pounds, I am going to make as many bowls, cups, and mugs as I can. I will be selling them on my Etsy (which is in complete atrophy) and at the Arts Festival.

I'm sure a couple more projects will pop up throughout this month, but I will probably be very busy completing the above list.

Figure, Value and Independent Consentration

For the past couple weeks I have been working on a value study and a figure study. Both have helped my concentration, which has been lacking of late.
The figure study was challenging because of the emotions and themes I was attempting to portray. This piece is the equivalent of me sharing my views on matters of human rights and organized religion. Instead of approaching this subject in a way that was outright obtrusive, I went for a more subtle, ambiguous approach.
I had a lot of fun getting all of the small details in the watercolor value study. The hardest part about this painting for me was starting it. For some reason I put off doing it for a couple weeks until I had no choice but to do it. I'm happy how it turned out for the most part.
I also started on my independent concentration this week. I will have post soon dedicated to explain what I am doing with the project as well as the themes behind it.

Art n' Stuff

I have been neglecting this blog for a while know, I apologize.

Over the past month I have been working on a few different projects. ( I will post pictures with my next post) I did a self portrait in monochromatic oil paint. I struggled with it at first, but after I got the base layer down,  I found it much easier. This is probably the most personal painting I have ever done.

I also did a reflective still life using blue glass mason jars, water and a green glass wine bottle using watercolor. I had a lot of fun with this one; I find watercolor painting calming. Again, I will post pictures with my next post. =)
